St. LOUIS, Mo.—Anglers spend a lot of time and focus on improving their casting techniques, what gear to buy, finding the just the right bait or lures, and reading weather and water conditions.  But every bit as important is keeping fishing gear in top working condition.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding a virtual Fishing Rod and Reel Maintenance program Monday, April 10 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.  The online program will be presented by the staff at the August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center.  It’s free and open to all ages.

“Keeping your fishing equipment well maintained is essential to make sure everything is in proper working condition before you head out to the lake, pond, river, or stream,” said Bryant Hertel, Busch Outdoor Education Center Manager.

This virtual class will go into detail regarding the ins and outs of keeping fishing gear in tip top shape. Participants will learn about tools and materials they will need.  Range staff will also demonstrate how to properly maintain fishing rods and reels to illustrate all the techniques discussed.

“The program will cover what equipment and tools are needed to properly maintain fishing rods and reels and show how to use it,” Hertel said.  “Both experienced and beginning anglers should be able to take away some helpful tips.”

The virtual Fishing Rod and Reel Maintenance program is a free, but advanced online registration is required at https://short.mdc.mo.gov/4Qf.  Participants will receive an email with a WebEx link approximately 24 hours prior to the program, as well as a reminder email the day of the program. If the emails do not appear in their inbox, participants should check junk/spam folders.
